            BISHBRIKSHA

Traveling by boat to Calcutta, zamindar Nagendra (Jahar Ganguly) is caught
in a storm and takes refuge for the night at the nearest house visible. The sick
owner of the house breathes his last in front of him leaving behind daughter
Kundanandini (KANAN).  Nagendra sees that Kunda is helpless and takes her
to Calcutta at his sister Kamalmani’s (Meera Datta) place in the hope of finding
her uncle. After a futile search, Nagendra takes Kunda to his own house where
wife Suryamukhi (Santi Gupta) receives her with open arms as she has already
decided to marry her off to Taracharan (Janaki Bhattacharya) who has been
raised as her own brother after Tara’s widowed mother eloped with someone.
Although an ordinary village school master, Taracharan has rich friends notably
Debendra (Kumar Mitra) who comes to Tara’s house and meets Kunda and
develops a tremendous longing for her. A married life of three years and Tara
dies after a brief illness and debauch Debendra jumps at what he thinks as his
opportune time to get to his lady love. Suryamukhi however takes Kunda to her
residence where another drama starts. Nagendra is slowly attracted Kunda and
he does not hide this from his wife. Suryamukhi writes to Kamalmani seeking
help and she comes over taking leave from her loving husband Shreesh (Bhumen
Roy). Kamal offers to take Kunda to her house to sort out the problem but Kunda
is unwilling as she is also in love with Nagendra and is happy just being close to
him. Debendra meanwhile disguises as a vaishnavi and  comes to sing for Kunda
at Nagendra’s house. Suryamukhi is suspicious about the person and sends her
chief attendant Heera to find out the vaishnavi’s true identity. Heera comes to
know the truth about Debendra and reports back and Suryamukhi in a fit of anger
accuses Kunda of adultery. Kunda leaves the house at night but is found by Heera
who gives her shelter but does not disclose her whereabouts to anyone as she has
her own plans. One night Debendra comes to Heera’s house in search of Kunda but
she has left already sensing Heera’s ulterior motives. She plans to leave the village
but wants to have a last glimpse of Nagendra and goes to his house, where she is
found by Suryamukhi who brings her back. Nagendra announces his decision to
marry Kunda and even argues with friend Hardeb Ghosal (Tulsi Chakraborty) about
the necessities of this marriage. Resigned to fate, Suryamukhi agrees to Nagendra’s
marriage with Kunda but herself leaves the house on the wedding night. Having lost
Suryamukhi, Nagendra diverts all attention towards her and his second marriage
also turns sour. The search for Suryamukhi goes in vain. Suryamukhi travels by foot
to far off places but is soon taken ill . She is given shelter by Brahmachari (Saroj Bagchi).
A fire breaks out in this house and it is presumed that Suryamukhi is dead.
The news goes to Nagendra and he feels all is lost and even refuses to meet wife
Kunda, who now thinks that she is the cause behind all ills that has befallen them.
Nagendra avoids Kunda and in one such night he sees a shadow and realizes that it
is Suryamukhi who has come back. The news spreads and the entire household is busy
rejoicing when Kunda,  unaware of Suryamukhi’s return consumes poison that has been
supplied by Heera, who had toyed with the idea of getting close to Debendra using Kunda
but failed and decided to end Kunda’s life anyhow. The initial ecstasy over, Suryamukhi
misses Kunda and wants to meet her but finds her gasping for breath. Kunda dies in the
arms of her beloved husband telling him for the first time how much she cared for him……
