ARUP (Ashis Kumar) comes to Calcutta with a letter of introduction from his music
teacher. He hopes to meet Ratneswar Roy (Kamal Mitra), who is an ex student
of the same teacher and expects his help to establish himself in the unknown
city. He meets music critic Prabhat Sen (Jahar Ganguly), who guides him to the
great musician Ratneswar, who however insults him-Ratneswar has no time in
his busy schedule to look after other people’s interests. His wife Purabi (KANAN)
notices Arup’s insult and is eager to know more about him and help him but does
not know how to go about it. She herself was a singer of great repute but had to
give it up when struck by a heart disease and doctors had advised her to remain
out of the music world as her heart would not take the strains of singing. She is
happy that Arup has taken shelter in a rented room next to her aunt (Padmadebi)
house and that her cousin Sandhya (Monica Ganguly) has taken a keen interest
on this man and his music. Naren Haldar (Prashanta Kumar) gives music lessons
to Sandhya and also nurses some other hopes revolving her. Naren gets
annoyed with Sandhya’s love for Arup’s music and argues with Purabi that the
songs are sub standard. He works for a film produced by Kejrimal (Shyam Laha)
but cannot satisfy the producer with his creation and gets the bright idea of stealing
the tunes from the impoverished and helpless Arup when he practices his music.
The film “ Surer Parashey” turns out to be a big hit and  news papers are all praise
for Naren’s music and he stands established in the world of films. The treachery
however is not a secret to Purabi who has listened to Arup’s practicing and she
decides that Arup must be helped out. Arup meantime has not been able to pay
his landlord (Gangapada Bose) and has been out of job ever since he was
thrown out  of one by Sadhurambabu (Tulsi Chakraborty). He is homeless
and Sandhya meets him by accident and brings him to her house and Purabi,
determined to see that Arup gets his due,  decides to sing at a music conference
to introduce him  to people who mattered. Ratneswar comes to know of her plans
and is furious that she should disregard  doctor’s advice and sing  without his
knowledge. A verbal dual follows which results in a setback forPurabi and she
gets confined to bed. While Arup, Sandhya and Prabhat eagerly await Purabi’s
arrival on the crucial day, Ratneswar comes and announces that she is unwell
and he would take Arup to the conference. At the conference however, he does
the most unexpected. He explains the reasons behind Purabi’s intended come
back and her illness and welcomes the new singer whose songs are accepted
eagerly by listeners, and his place in the musical world is secure………
